have just built a new system from scratch however i am having problems installing an OS.
I have built the PC everything appears to be correct, I have one hard drive assigned to Master and plugged in the master IDE slot, the PC boots fine i have it set to run from Disc so it boots windows set up and goes through this fine, it lets me format the drive and then begins to install windows files.
After doing this it says the pc will reboot and i let this happen however when booting back up if you let it pass the "press any key to boot from CD" it says there is a disk read error and press Ctrl Alt Del to reboot.
If i boot from CD again it just repeats the motions of installing windows again.
PLEASE HELP i have no idea what is wrong, could it be a hard drive problem?!?!

In Bios have you set boot order to include a second boot device? That is 1st CDROM 2nd HDD on IDE 0
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.
Teach him to fish and his wife will never forgive you.

The HD is set up on the master IDE cable on the motherboard, the DVD drive is linked to the secondary IDE slot on motherboard, on BIOS i have set Primary device to boot as the DVD and Secondary as the Hard drive. When the system reboots after installing windows you have a 5 sec slot to hit any key to boot from CD if not it falls onto next device (in this case HD) but then it says disk read error press CTRL ALT DEL to reboot.

Does your xp cd have sp2 on it?

OK.Be aware that there are reported problems with SP2 and AMD64.
Which formatt are you choosing?NTFS or FAT32?

can you download a drive diagnostic from the manufactuer? or run chkdsk /r from the recovery console. (takes long time)

Did you make the partition 'active'.
This is what I'd do.
Go to http://www.bootdisk.com get a 98se bootdisk.
Repartition,make it active,formatt in FAT32,reinstall xp.

Sorry this is my first build how do you make the partition active, should i use this boot disk then and start again?

Don't mean to hijack the thread but indigian, what problems are there with Athlon64 and SP2?
I have an Athlon64 3200+ and I'm running XP Home with SP2 and have had no problems.

Just a thought everyone...just because a prompt says "press any key to boot from CD"(after set up has begun) from cd doesn't mean it has to be done. As long as the disc is in the drive during setup this prompt will appear. After setup begins and you see the prompt don't click on it and let windows continue to install. At this point windows files are already copied to the hard drive. If windows then won't install there maybe underlying problems worth looking into.
Also after reboot it helps to change the bios back to boot from hard drive. Hope this helps.

It's amazing how people ask some stupid questions to further confuse the situation. Does your CD have SP2? WHO CARES? What format did you use, NTFS or Fat32? Again, WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH THE PROBLEM? And you didn't activate the partition???? Are you kidding me? Matt CLEARLY spelled out his problem and no one has stuck to the subject let alone answered it or come up with a viable solution.
The problem is likely that your boot order is not right. Go into BIOS and change the boot order to HDD first. XP activates the partition automatically. Also check that your HDD's jumper is set to master as you are using an IDE interface. Your BIOS should indicate that the HDD is primary master and the optical drive is secondary master. If it does not then this is the problem.

"It's amazing how people ask some stupid questions to further confuse the situation."
Thats as may be but boot order has also nothing to do with it!
Seeing as SOME AMD64 setups have a problem with SP2 it felt logical just to find out?
OK,XP activates the partition automatically,I learn.

Yep,he did spell it out but maybe you had something else on your mind when replying?
Matt
It is a fair point about the jumpers though.Check to make sure that they are correct.

I have checked the Jumpers and it is set to Master and it also shows as master in BIOS.
After changing the boot order i still get the disk read error.
Also i have now bought another hard drive to rule out this and the same thing occurs on the new HD.
I have checked the wiring against my old pc and everything is correct please help!

Badboy....
Did you find any usefull info about AMD64's and SP2?
Matt....
Could you check the bios to make sure your booting to the correct IDE/HDD.
Some bios name them IDE,some name them HDD.
Some start at 0,some start at 1.Check which yours is and change if needed?
Could you also tell us your system specs?

I may not have read this yet in all of the above.
Install winxp,
when it restarts, remove the setup disc.see what happens.

Hope you fixed the problem already. If not...
I'll take a stab at it here...
Just guessing since I use 2000pro and Not XP but sometimes after a fresh install I get "press any key to boot from cd" then let it pass then see "NTLDR not found press ctrl alt del" and it repeats the cycle. I use the repair feature on the windows 2000 disk to fix this. Another option would be to copy the NTLDR files from the install CD to a floppy so they're handy to install if this happens again.
XP may be having a similar problem with your system boot files without spelling it out.
Also make sure there is no floppy in the drive as this will cause an NTLDR or disk read error since its trying to boot from the floppy and not the hard drive.
Another thing that will cause NTLDR or disk read errors on boot is if jumper settings on master or slave drives is incorrect. My Maxtor has Master/Slave/Cable select ...
but my Western Digital has Master Single/ Master wtih slave present/Cable Select.I usually run two drives so the WD is set for master with slave present. First time I unplugged the 2nd drive though and put it in my other system I was scratching my head as to why the pc with the WD wouldn't boot up even though it was the master boot drive. Had to change the jumper to Master Single since I removed the slave.
Don't know if any of this could be your problem or not...but if its trying to boot from a non system disk it might error. If you've confirmed there is no floppy disk in the drive and the jumpers on the hard drives (and CD or CDRW) are correct...then it might be a system file intstall error that needs repair.
I don't know if XP has a recovery/repair console option on the CD but if it does ...set your bios to boot from CD and then use the repair/recovery feature and see if it can fix the system files.
Good luck.
