New OS old sound card

Specs: Windows XP sp2
I have old Compaq 5008US which came installed with WindowsME. I later updated it to WinXP Home, at which time I lost my sound. There is no sound 'card', it is onboard with the mother board, so I am not sure of the model. Wondering how I can find a driver for this sound card that will make it run in Windows XP SP2?

The best would be from Compaq support.

However if not available for your new o/s, try to identify the chipset used, which should be detailed in the mobo manual, and google for a generic driver for such.

However, you may encounter a problem as drivers sometimes are modified by the pc makers.

It might be easier just to add a sound card, which would probably perform much better than the onboard sound anyway.

I think that has the ES1988 audio chip. The compaq download page for your model doesn't show any XP drivers for it. However I found this that should work:
