A friend bought foxconn Sis 661fx7mj motherboard and a dual core processor. now he was told that this motherboard can support a dual core processor but i looked it up and it said it supports pentium d,4,celeron,celeron d processors.
can someone elaborate on this?
but aside from that, would the cpu cause the motherboard to not post/boot? the fans spin up, but just a black screen appears.
"Supports Intel®Pentium® D/Pentium® 4 /Celeron® D processor in an LGA775 package"
A pentium D is a dual-core CPU, but the board does NOT support a Core 2 Duo. What CPU are you asking about?
Also, the board *should* have been benchtested before installing it in a case...my guess is this wasn't done? Take it out, lay it on the bench with just the CPU w/HSF, one stick of RAM & monitor connected to the onboard video. Connect the PSU (20-pin & 4-pin ATX plugs) & jump-start by momentarily shorting the 2 pins on the board that go to the case switch with a screwdriver. It *should* post.
Who told your friend that that motherboard supports dual core processors, because the specs say that it doesn't ? If it was the person who sold it, I would return it and get a motherboard that does support dual core processors. There are plenty of those types of motherboards at a reasonable price. Also, what type of RAM are you using ? That motherboard only supports DDR.
Unless I'm mistaken, there is no Pentium D that runs at 1.6GHz. I believe what your friend probably bought is an E2140 Allendale which is not supported by that board.
I can see how people can get confused with thinking that a Pentuim D and a Pentuim Dual Core are both the same thing in terms of support for older intel motherboards that only support Pentuim D's, but it's not. Intel should have made it more clear.
