Comment:

I just put together a budget machine for a friend. It's a Foxconn NF4K8AB-RS mobo, Sempron 2800 CPU with a Leadtek PX6200 vid card in the PCI express slot. When I boot up, lights come on and fans spin, but there is no video...the screen is dead with no indication that power is even getting to the screen. I even tried an old PCI x1 vid card that I have and got the same result. Am I missing something here or is the mobo bad? Hints? Ideas? Thanks!

Sounds like a bad mobo/cpu. Try removing the mem and booting to see if you get rapid beeps. If you don't hear any beeps it is most likely a bad mobo or cpu

I have posted this many, many times. The only efficient way to troubleshoot this problem, is, actually, to presume you might have this problem BEFORE you put the motherboard in the case---therefore, on a new build, BEFORE you assemble the machine, do THIS

Lay out on a safe table, and hook up ONLY

the motherboard, CPU, and RAM

video card, if separate, and monitor

keyboard and PSU

THAT's IT!!! No drives, no floppy, no nothing,

make sure the thing will POST, and "boot" into the bios setup.

If not, try elimination:

Try resetting the bios

Try a known good reliable video card

If you have two sticks of RAM, try only one, and switch the slots

Try a spare PSU

Check the motherboard support site and MAKE SURE the RAM and CPU is compatible, and check for any configuration jumpers on the motherboard.

Frankly, it's just not that often that you get a "bad" component out of the box anymore.

Tried pulling the RAM and still no beeps.
Tried known good vid card
Tried no drives
Tried bios reset
Still nothing, dang it
Wouldn't I still get to the bios even if the CPU was bad?

Did you take anti-static precautions when handling the CPU ???

A common mistake is installing a motherboard mounting stud where there isn't a hole in the motherboard. This can short out the motherboard.
Good advice from Name.

I was REAL carefull with the CPU. Grounding strap, don't touch the pins, etc. Since I'm not getting any beeps, isn't it most likely the mobo? Is there any way to differentiate which one is the problem? I don't have a spare CPU or mobo lying around to try them both.
I have all the mounts in the right places, I checked and rechecked that before I installed it. However, I am one stud short and I couldn't find one the same size so there is one missing. Could that do it?

If you don't have all the mounts it is fine, this will not cause your mobo to fail. It is difficult to say what is not working in your situation. Usually it is mobo but since it is a new install cpu could have been damage by mishandling. You may have damaged it when putting the CPU Fan. Again I would say that it is mobo but you would have to check it with a working cpu or check the cpu with a working mobo.

OK, thanks y'all. I'll take the CPU to my buddies computer repair shop and get him to test it for me, I guess. Thanks for the help!

Once you get down to the basics I've posted above, there is no good way to test a failure except by substitution/ elimination.

You will get NO POST with RAM or CPU missing. You may or may not get error beeps with just the RAM missing.

MAKE SURE the PSU is good

TAKE THE THING OUT OF THE CASE

I agree with name...

"MAKE SURE the PSU is good"

I'll add to the above that wattage is only one thing to consider...amperage is even more important, especially on the +12v rail. So if you got some cheap PSU for less that $40 or bought a case/PSU combo for less than $75 and/or there's less 16A on the +12v, chances are good that the PSU is inadequate. Also, make sure the square 4-pin plug is connected to the board.

"TAKE THE THING OUT OF THE CASE"

Excellent advice! Start all over again...this time, remove the board & bench test it as suggested in response #2

Took everything out, set it up on the table with 1 stick of known good RAM, CPU, vid card and PSU and still no post. Had the CPU tested in another board and it posted fine, so I guess it's the mobo. It's a 420W PSU, it sure as heck ought to at least post with nothing hooked up to it, don't ya think?
