Comment:

I just recently upgraded my M/B to a Gigabyte GA-81945P-G Socket Type LGA775 for Intel Pentium D processor, everythings hooked up correctly, we've checked many many times. For some reason the new M/B wont detect my old hard drive. We've check the drive on other computers as well to make sure it was ok and it is. Does anyone know what might be causing this problem? Thanks in advance,

Is your jumpers set to cable select or master? .. if it set on cable select try setting it to master and CD to slave (if there on the same cable).

We've tried changing the jumper settings from master and slave and what not, still no luck, my hard drive is on its own cable anyways.

I'd try this, if you haven't already

Change the cable for a differnt one.

Lose ANY other hardware temporarily.

Reset (clear) the bios

See if there is a option in the bios (maybe not) to manually enter the disk specs

MAKE SURE the drive is getting power--can you hear it spin up?

ANY chance? the cable is backwards?

If all else fails, set the drive for cable select

Ok, tried switching out the cable, losing additional hardware, and reseting the BIOS and setting the drive to Cable select, still no luck. The drive is getting power and the cables are in properly, I also saw no option to manually enter the specs in BIOS. I was wondering though, is it at all possible that my drive may not be compatible with this M/B? Just a thought...

One other thing you could try is look in the bios/ setup for something akin to "hard drive predelay" and set that up a few more seconds in time--This will give the hard drive time to "get up" before the bios detect gives up on it.

I have found a drive or two---always an unknown component that was stripped from a used machine, that was "fussy" for some reason in one machine or another---and I've had cases where, for example, two hard drives JUST would NOT exist happily in the same machine, DITTO once in awhile some or another HDD and a CDROM--either or both would would by themselves, or in another machine.

Ok, this is getting a little odd in my opinion now. On several occasions now, it has detected my HDD, as well as several other drives that weve tried, however the system still fails to start up everytime. It will either go to a screen saying that "windows failed to start properly" and I can choose from safe modes and standard startup. No matter which I choose though, a blue screen will flash for 1 second and then everything reboots and starts over. Occasionally however, the blue screen will remain up and claims that my HDD is corrupt or damaged in someway, which cannot be the case(its done this with all 3 that we have tried, and all 3 work in other computers) Im about ready to call this a bad motherboard and get it replaced, unless anyone has any other ideas.

Just for kicks, try hooking it up to the second channel. It's possible that you have a flaky IDE controller #1.

Yes, we thought that as well, weve tried it in all 3 channels, still get the same results.

Best run a ram test before sending the MB back.

Best

You'll have to excuse me, Im not too knowledgable when it comes to computers, but what exactly do you mean by ram test? testing the ram on other computer? if thats the case, theres one small problem, my ram is only compatible with this new M/B and none of the other computers in the house.

Well I've worked mine out. Turned out to be a missing set of RAID drivers. I was installing Windows XP Pro x64, so your results may vary.

The solution in my case was to download the drivers onto another machine. And create a driver floppy. Then while windows was installing I used the F6 option to load the ITERAID drivers off the floppy. Search the drivers section at ATI and you should find the driver disk. Hopefullly it will help.

There are some goofy hoops to jump through to get this to work for x64, but it should be much easier for the standard XP installation. If anyone wants the goofy steps necessary for x64, send me an email at mahan@mailblocks.com Beware the Challenge Response bot, and that my mailblocks account is being shutdown by AOHELL in about a month.
