Hi.
I also have some of the same issue as http://www.computing.net/hardware/wwwboard/forum/41163.html, just with other configurations. I can't make my old motherboard detect my new 300 GB HDD. I tried out the point with changing to newer IDE cable, and it turns out that there are one pin more on the motherboard than on the cable, so I simply can't use the newer cable. Does this meen that I can't make the new HDD work on my old computer?
I haven't found out where to find BIOS upgrade to my computer. Any suggestions?
My new HDD is a Samsung SpinPoint T133 HD300LD (300 GB).
My motherboard is:
Manufacturer : Pronix (Epox)
MP Support : No
Model : 08/03/1998 For Apollo VP3 AGP/PCIset
System BIOS : 08/03/98-VP3-586B-W877-2A5LEPA9C-00
Chipset : VIA Apollo (M)VP3Processor:
Model : AMD-K6(tm) 3D processor
Speed : 334MHz
Package : Super Socket 7 PGAAny help is appreciated!
Regards,
Tomsi

I think your cable has one of the holes missing in order to locate it properly.
Try a cable without the blanked off hole.
If the cable is flat, there will be a red stripe down one side, which indicated the end of the connector where pin 1 is.
You will find the number 1 printed on the mobo by its hdd connector.
Good Luck - Keep us posted.

Dude that rig rocks XD
Anyhoo, I agree with jam. Because that motherboard probably supports drives with a max of 8Gb or 33GB also it is proably only ATA33. If you get a controller card it should run fine. I hope this drive is for storage purposes only because you will probably have troubles getting it to boot off a controller card.

DIE STEAM DIE!

There is probably a BIOS update that would allow the use of a 128 gigabyte hard drive with that board's standard IDE controller. But 300 gig? No way. That is beyond what the chipset can support. As mentioned in the previous post, the best solution is an IDE controller card.

If your old HD is still working, keep it and connect the new hard drive to the card. Use it as storage. You can also move some programs to it and pickup space on your C: drive.
Sorry, I do not check for private messages

Just out of curiosity, why would you need a 300GB hard drive on such an ancient computer?
It's too slow to play DVD rips, and much too slow to play games.

Thanks for your replies, folks!
The purpose is to use it as a fileshare to back up data, and to play mp3's to my stereo (controlled through remote desktop). Then I use a laptop to all my other work.
So it seems that I need an ATA controller card, and a HDD on about 20 GB for OS...?
Do you have any suggestions/examples of suitable ATA controller cards?
