I just went out and picked up a secondary hard drive got it all setup and that works fine. My problem now is the secondary hard drive is now named D: vol 1. D: drive was my cd drive before i installed this new hard drive.
Im not sure if I just need to swtich the wiring or something, the way it is configured now the Grey IDE cord is plugged into the primary hard drive which is the master, the middle connecor goes to the new hard drive, and the last connector to the motherboard. I have no jump plugs on the secondary hard dirve. On the Primary I have jump plugs on the first, second, and fourth pins.
The CD drive that is no longer showing up "My Computer" was set with a jump plug on the third pin and was connected to the Blue ribbon. This CD drive we bought to replace the old CD drive that came with the computer which is still physically in the comouter, and connected to the blue ribbon as well.
What could I do to get my CD drive back? When you insert a disk the drive works but it says that the D: cannot be accessed. What could I do to get my CD drive to work again.
Thanks
Mike

I just checked under system BIOS and the seconadary IDE Master and slave both say "None", Im guessing I just need to change those jump plug things.
Still puzzled though.

That is the way Windows assigns the drive letters. There is software available that allow's you to "letter" them as you wish and Windows XP has that feature built in.

Wish you had provided more information on the HD's, such as make and model. I have never seen a HD with three jumpers. Where are the colored ribbon cables plugged in on the motherboard? (Which ribbon to which IDE channel)

With the information you did give, I suggest the following; Look at each HD and the CD drives and you will see a diagram showing how to place the jumpers. It will me marked something like M CS S. Jumper the primary and secondary HD's as Master (M) and the CD drive as Slave (S).

Install the Primary HD and the CD drive on the ribbon cable that goes to IDE 1 slot on the motherboard. The HD should be on the end of the cable and the CD drive in the middle position.
Place the other hard drive on the end of the ribbon cable that goes to IDE 2 slot on the motherboard.

Another option would be to place all jumpers as Cable select and place the drives on the ribbon cables as above.

The primary hard drive should be the one with the operating system and Windows will name it "C". The CD drive will be named "E" and the other hard drive will be "D".

In the BIOS, set all of these drives to Auto.

You need jumpers on the slave drive (new, secondary drive). The label on the drives tells where to place the jumpers. You may need to change the jumper settings on the primary drive also.
