New Hard Drive with OS?

I just got my dad's old CPU. He thought it would be good for my kids to just mess around on. The computer repair shop that had it took the hard drive out of it and told my dad it had physically crashed, which is why he bought a new pc.
Anyway, I'd like to put a new hard drive in it, but I can't seem to find any with an OS already on it. Does anyone know if anyplace sells hard drives with an OS on it already?

Used computer shops do. I have bought a few in the past with OS on it but they are usually old OS like Dos & Windows 3.1
I actually bought a $5.00 computer one time from the salvation army just to get the hard drive out of it. It was an old 486 but the hard drive had Windows 95 on it.

no "legal" shops do but like Pam said if you search hard enough and have patience you will eventually find. besides you would need more than an OS you would need specific hardware drivers for the computer.I would suggest buying a HD and then an older OS (95/98) Maybe you or someone you know is in possession of such an OS??

agree on all above. HOwever, even if the os comes with the hd, you probably still need to do a clean installtion to avoid any problems.

Because Windows 95 and up detects hardware during installation, a hard drive that came with such an OS on it would not work very well.
