I have a DFI TM75C mother board running xp pro on a new WD 80G hardrive (WD800JB). I by mistake bought a 80 G Maxtor SATA drive (6Y080L0). Questions. What is SATA technology, do I have to use a SATA cable or can I use th big old one in the case and will the two drives play well with each other being two different technologies?

Next is I want to put W98SE on one drive and XP pro on the other. Can I do that, if so how?

What makes you think that this drive is SATA? Maxtor has these models:
6Y080L0 7200 80GB ATA/133 2MB Buffer
6Y080P0 7200 80GB ATA/133 8MB Buffer
6Y080M0 7200 80GB SATA/150 8MB Buffer

I have the 6Y080P0. The only difference between it and the 6Y080L0 is the buffer sizes. If you had the SATA version you would have model 6Y080M0.

If you really have the Maxtor 6Y080M0 then it must be hooked up to a SATA connector. If there are none on your motherboard then you need a PCI controller card that supports SATA.

You either need a new motherboard that supports SATA hard drives, or a SATA PCI controller card. If you can, return the HDD and/or exchange it for an IDE drive
