I guess the easiest way I could think of would to be to set the "old" HDD as a secondary (slave) once you get the "new" HDD installed. Another way would to be to zip all the data you want to save and then burn it to CD. Another option would be if you had a another computer to put the new HDD in and then connect the two PC'c using something like DCC (Direct-Cable Connect) using the serial ports, and then transfer your data. There are even more ways to do this, it all depends on what you have available to do the transfer. Honestly, I beleive that setting the old HDD up as the slave is probably the fastest and less time consuming. Thats all I have.

Yea ryan, use Norton Ghost to image your entire HD (old one) and then just load the image on the new HD. It won't take long, probably bout a few minz if your HD's data are not a lot.

i have about 3 GB of info on the old hard drive to transfer to a new 40 GB drive...for "ghosting" do the drives have to be in the same computer? and if i wanted to direct connect the computers like underdog said does anyone know where i could go to find out exactly how to do this process? im transferring all my old components to a new case with a new mobo and so it is possible for me to run two computers at once...thanks for the responses

DK was right in creating an image of your entire HDD with Norton's Ghost. I don't know where my head was (probably up my arse) when making my suggestions. Just remember one thing if you create an image of your old HDD and save the image to CD's (Ghost 2002 will do "spanning"). That all your files will be Read-Only when they are placed back on your new HDD. Here is a link that will explain in great detail Norton's Ghost to accomplish what you want to do. If you want to go another route like DCC (maybe because you can't afford Norton's Ghost) let me know & I will see that you get the step by step instructions for doing it that way.
