Specs: win ME, AMD k6/256
Hi all;
I've been trying to install win ME on my old laptop. I kinda gave up when in a previous post it was suggested that a new hdd was needed. Well I found a hdd cheap that listed it was comptatable w/ what I had. Now hardware is installed (physically) but thats as far as I can go. I put the boot disk in the floppy drive and starts up to the setup and logo and then nothing. It goes no further, I put the ME disk in and nothing. I never replaced a hdd before so newbie at it. I also tried a hiren's boot disk and nothing. I have 10 days to return the drive if I can't get it work so any and all quick responses will be GREATLY appreciated.

What's the hard drive model number?

You first need to partition the drive so don't start the ME setup yet. You can choose 'start the computer without cd rom support' or whatever gets you to the a:\> prompt. Type fdisk and enter at the prompt, Y to large disk support, then option 4. If it's a used drive there may be partitions on the drive and you should remove them. So hit ESC to get to the previous menu and then option 3 and remove.

Once you've removed them or if there weren't any there to begin with use option 1. It'll ask how much space to use for the partition. For convience choose to use it all.

When it's done, hit ESC and reboot with the bootdisk. Go to the a:\> prompt again and type format c: and enter.

When it's done formatting you can start the installation or reboot and do the installation. You will of course need cdrom support this time.

Boot off the WinME boot floppy, then select "minimal boot". At the A:\> prompt, type FDISK & press ENTER. Then follow these instructions to partition & format the drive:

Once you've done that, follow these instructions:
