Comment:

I have just installed a new video card on my PC, it's a Sapphire Radeon HD3450, to replace my old one which blew up a couple of months back. It works fine, but ever since I installed it, I have no sound on my PC. In Device Manager the sound card is still showing as installed and working properly. The speakers still crackle slightly if you turn up the volume, so I assume they are okay, but I don't have any sound at all.

Do you have on-board audio you can try to see if that works?

I am using onboard audio, I don't have a separate sound card (sorry if message was misleading)

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling your audio drivers?

Go to Control Panel> Sounds and Audio> Audio> sound playback Default Device. Make sure that is listed as the on board sound and not something else.

Also in control panel> Sounds and Audio> sounds. Highlight a Program event and then to the right of the Sounds box click on the arrow button. You should here a Windows action sound.

If you have a speaker icon in the tray by the clock double click on it. Master Volume should show. Be sure nothing is muted.

There is only one device listed in the Playback tab of the Sounds section on CP (running Vista so CP options are slightly different). Nothing is muted and action sounds do not play.

If you have a HD sound chip you may need to open the software for it and program the jacks. I assume you have not moved any connections in the interim. HD audio jack are fully programmable and you must select the output jack you are using in order for sound to work.

Just to let you know, I have managed to fix the problem. I went into the BIOS and changed the integrated audio from 'Auto' to 'Enabled' and suddenly my sound was back. I think the graphics card has somehow confused the PC into thinking it had another sound card installed.
