New Dell laptop can't print on Dell printer

Dell Inspiron 1545
March 8, 2010 at 19:37:27
Specs: Windows XP
Has anyone else had this problem?
A new Inspiron 1545 won't print to a 968 All In One printer (via wireless).
The attempt to install it just seems caught in an endless loop.
Dell TechSupport is useless, asking me to pay THEM $129 for help.
This is nonsense, I think, and I'm ready to put the 'puter back into the box and return it.
Any help / experience with this problem?
Using Windows 7.
Thanks!

Start off by seeing if you can connect to the printer using a cable - wireless printers are notoriously painful to set up & keep running wirelessly. What sort of router are you using? the printer may not like newer 'n' routers. What sort of encryption does the router use? - you may have to lower it to WEP rather than WPA.

Yes, tried the cable connect but no joy there.
It's strange because when I attempt to install (after removing the device), I can get through the install process OK, but it seems locked in a loop at the point where it says "Installing printer".
The weird thing is that the 1545 "sees" the correct printer, but trying to print gives me an error message that the printer config. is wrong.

Oh - BTW, the router is a 'g' (Linksys) which I've been using successfully with another laptop (1520) with XP as the OS.

If you haven't already done so, try (re)downloading the drivers from the dell website. I'm guessing you know that you need to install the software before plugging in the printer. Is the printer new as well as the laptop? Have you tried installing it on your old laptop, if you've still got it?
