Subject: New CPUOS: XPCPU/Ram: Athlon XP 768PC2100 |
Comment: Just got my computer back from best buy. My old CPU 2600+Athlon Xp was fried. So when I went to pick it up, the ticket said they put a K7-2800XPGPC in it which the guy said was an upgrade. But my pc reads it as UNKNOWN CPU 1667MHz. I did some research and saw this CPU is 333MHz FSB and the mobo that came with this pc can only handle 266MHz FSB. Wonder if this is why the cpu is read wrong? Any ideas? thanks AMD Athlon XP 2600+ @ 2.13GHz 768MB DDR eVGA GeForce FX 5700 Ultra DDR2 Thermaltake Silent PurePower 420W

Reply: (edit)Yes, this is why it's reading wrong. You need to take it back and explain this to them so you can get the right cpu in it. ASUS A8N-SLI A64 3000+ 1gig Corsair XMS LEADTEK PX6600GT TDH Enermax 535W Dual 80gig WD.

Reply: (edit)Ofcourse...you could always keep that cpu and get a new mobo that could support it. The parts you have seem pretty nice and you can get a mobo that will support that cpu for a really cheap price. I just dont know about the emachine case, but a new case can be bought off newegg.com for as little as $18. ASUS A8N-SLI A64 3000+ 1gig Corsair XMS LEADTEK PX6600GT TDH Enermax 535W Dual 80gig WD.

Reply: (edit)Ugh, just realized you would need new ram too. PC2700 at least, although I'd get PC3200. Half a gig of pc3200 can be purchased for as little as $40 off newegg. ASUS A8N-SLI A64 3000+ 1gig Corsair XMS LEADTEK PX6600GT TDH Enermax 535W Dual 80gig WD.

Reply: (edit)although unlikely, it could be a genuine mistake by them as the 2600xp came in 266 and 333mhz fsb versions. More likely, they knew it was not right but still put it in as XP processors with 266mhz fsb are now rare and they probably had none, most retailers not selling them at all, only stocking CPUs with 333mhz fsb or higher.

Reply: (edit)The FSB mismatch is most likely the reason for the incompatibility, just IMHO, really no excuse for this. If the processor isn't supported by the board, you are asking for trouble down the road. If the CPU can't be read by changing jumper settings, it could be a gray market OEM item or is completely incompatible.
