OS: XP Pro
CPU/Ram: e4300/1gb
Model/Manufacturer: Intel

C2D e4300
1gb ocz ram
EVGA nForce 650i Ultra MB t1 version
8400gs video card
80gb hd
cd/dvd burner

Those are the specs...i know the video card is not so great but he mainly just wanted something cheap but decent to be able to watch movies and browse the web...

After i got all the parts in it turns out Tigerdirect forgot to put in the 80gb hd (which now it should be here tomorrow) but i had an extra sata 320 gb that he could use until his came in...so i installed windows and everthing went fine. But for some reason it wont read cds or dvds in the drive...i checked bios drives are detected. One time i put a cd in for the mb drivers and nothing i tried to explore the drive and it just freezes..but i take the cd out and everthing is fine. sometimes it shows the cd is in there when its not so i dunno if its the cd drives or what...the only thing that i can think it might be is the hd cause i was having problems with it before. cause im my pc when its the secondary drive (slave) my pc wont even boot but when i take it out its fine...ive ran disk checks it had alot of bad clusters and it said it repaired them...but it still does the same thing...ive tried different cables for cd drives and hd and still nothing..hopefully its just the hd so when the 80gb gets here i can just swap them...but does anywone know if its the hd or what could be causing this...ne help is appreciated...

thanks

You need to install the MBoard chipset drivers. They should be on a CD that came with the MBoard. You also need to use 80 wire cables. If you are recycling cables you may be installing 40 wire cables. 80 wire cables are always color coded. The MBoard end may be blue, red, yellow, never black. The other end will be black with grey in the center.

Sorry i did forget to mention, i did end up getting the drivers and and everthing installed and even all windows upadates...had to use my digital camera and transfer them with the usb...cause internet would not work without ethernet driver..and drives would not read cds so that was the only thing i could do...so even after all that still does the same thing...still freezes and really slow when cd is insterted...and sometimes just stop responding all together....and am using all the proper cables...still no luck...
Any more ideas?

Did you have any input into this config? Why an nForce based board instead of an Intel based board? And why TigerDirect instead of Newegg or some other reputable vendor?

I hate suggesting this, but if you're using IDE rather than SATA & both drives share the same cable, try using the CS (cable select) jumper setting on both drives. And make sure the HDD is connected to the end plug on the cable.

Yeah i had some input...the mb has one ide so the cd drives are on one cable and the hd is on the sata cable...and yes i know i probably would have been better off using newegg instead of tigerdirect but everyone makes mistakes..i dunno why i went with tiger. Anyways why should i have chosen and intel based board over nforce? just wondering...i mean he didnt want to spend much and yeah i wouldnt have built this cofig for myself... ive never really used intel bases boards and have had no major problems with nforce, so i just went with it..did i do that bad? oops

You didn't necessarily do bad by going with the nForce, but boards based on the Intel P35 or slightly older P965 chipset perform better & overclock better. The P965 was THE chipset to get before the P35 came along. P965 boards have dropped in price so they're a good deal.

"the mb has one ide so the cd drives are on one cable"

OK, why two optical drives? Sometimes they simply don't play well together when placed on the same cable/channel. Choose one, make sure the jumper is set to master & temproarily disconnect the other, then see what happens.

ok well next time ill keep that in mind and go with an intel based board. thanks for the info on that jam...

"OK, why two optical drives?"

he wanted 2 where he could copy dvd or cd from one to the other without haveing to save it to the pc first....and i did unplug one and set the jumper to master still didnt work..But i have been running the seatools disk diagnostics on the hd and wow only 1 percent and over 100 errors..

and after i repair errors i do the long test again and it finds errors again sometimes the same ones so do i just keep running it until i get no errors? Or is it just gonna keep repeating and getting errors?

would it be better to use the dos version of seatools or windows version...?

I would run it from DOS. If the drive's bad, it's bad. Is it still under warranty? Get the RMA process going & have it replaced.

If the drives would not read CDs how did you install WinXP? Do you mean the drives don't work in Windows?

"ive probably had it for about 8 months"

Seagate has one of the best HDD warranties in the business. Try using the troubleshooter:

If your harddrive is crapping out then your data integrity is in question. Don't waste your time trying to get things working.

Optical drives should read without any propietory chipset drivers being installed. If that isn't happening you have a WinXP install that is FUBARED.
