Comment: Hi I am building a new pc, installed the motherboard, ram, harddrive, cpu, video card etc. when i switch it on I dont get a display I can hear the hard drive spin round a few times but the monitor light just flashes as though there is no connection. I have also cleared the CMOS but this hasnt worked. Any ideas? could this be a faulty CPU?

Reply: (edit)Start by removing everything & re-checking the motherboard mountings aren't shorting against the case. Insert just the CPU/heatsink/fan, re-attach the ATX power cable, the header pins for the front panel and the speaker. Switch on and see if you get some POST error beeps - you should do as there's no memory & video. If you get the beeps add one memory chip, making sure it's firmly seated, and your video card. Switch on again and see if it gets to the boot screen, looking for your drives - if it does, attach drives etc. & away you go. If you get no beeps in the first place, check your power supply and then start suspecting the motherboard. To be honest, CPUs are lower down on the list of suspects in cases like this. Reply: (edit)I ALWAYS bench test a board before installing in the case...that way I know if the setup is working BEFORE I install it. It makes troubleshooting much easier! Try disconnecting the hard drive, floppy, CD, & remove any add on cards. See if it'll boot with just the minimum (motherboard, CPU w/HSF, ONE stick of RAM, video card, & keyboard...nothing else)...if it boots up, something you had connected is the problem...if not, you've narrowed it down. Also, double check the ClearCMOS jumper & any other jumpers on the board...check your case power switch connection as well.

Reply: (edit)ok removed everything did as you said, inserted a brand new processeor which is compatible with the board, started to boot up and it suddenly switched off. removed the processor and it seemed to be burnt. now wont load up again. seems to be blowing my processors. must be a problem with the motherboard as i have checked the motherboard documentation and all jumper settings are correct. Any other reasons for blowing the processors?? it is compatible with up to amd athlon 3000 and im only putting in an amd 2000.. This is beginning to cost quite a bit of money in processors.
