Is it possible to network two computers through a direct cable going from one network card to the other? And if so can I use a phone cord or do I need to get a networking cord?

You can. You will need what's known as a CAT5 (ethernet) crossover cable -- not a regular cable, and certainly not a telephone cable.

You could use a serial to serial or usb to usb cable, bit i highly recomand the ethernet cat5 crossover cable that Kevin mentioned, it provides much more speed and let's you with one more free serial/usb port ;))

It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice...

If your network cards have coax connectors, you can use RG-58 cable and a T connector and 50 ohm load on each end.

Well, if you have a few bucks, why not get a switch or router instead of using crossover cable? Honestly, switches now run often times for $20, and routers a few dollars more after rebate.
