neither of my USB ports or my touch pad work

November 17, 2010 at 23:10:00
Specs: Windows XP
My touchpad and one USB port haven't been working. Now the second USB port stopped working, so I can't even use a mouse! I'm prepared that it might be just worthwhile to buy a new laptop at this point. The problem is, I just took a 2 week vacation and all my photos are on the laptop and no longer on my camera. How can I get these off of the laptop? Do I have to get the computer fixed? Is there a low cost way to do this? I hate to spend alot of money on an old laptop to be fixed if its not much more to get a new one. Its a Dell and is only 3 years old but I've had alot of problems with it.

Depends on the problem.

One is hardware and I doubt you could fix it but maybe if a simple solder joint.

Another is the bios settings. Might look in there for any enable or such.

One is to try a cold reset. Pull battery and ac and then press power button a few times. It might help but it can't hurt to try.

Might be that some usb device is taking too much current and when you try it the usb drops off. Might be able to view windows under hardware show hidden devices.

Lastly is the OS. It may have some issue like a motherboard driver or even enabled usb.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?
