Subject: Need to replace fan....OS: XPCPU/Ram: 512 |
Comment: Hi, I am quite new to the inside of my machine and after quite alot of whirring I decided to open her up. I found that a fan was the culprit, I am unsure what it does but it's called MSI AGP X8. I uplugged this and the sound stopped, once I plugged it vack in, it made a louder noise.....my question is this - Is this the northbridge fan? and if so will a Zalman Northbridge Silent Cooler be a fine replacement? I really need help!!! PLEASE! Thanks in advance! alan .

Reply: (edit)If it is a fan it can be replaced. If it is you V.Card fan, you can buy those at any computer parts store, they are cheap. There are 4 screws that hold the fan onto the heatsink underneath; just back those screws out and unplug the fan. Take it into the store with you for size comparing. You can try to put a tiny drop of general household oil on the bearing in the center. It may or may not fix it. Cheaper & easier just to replace it. This procedure is the same for your northbridge fan, case fans or even the CPU fan. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime; Then industry pollutes the water and kills all the fish.

Reply: (edit)Most likely what you are looking at is the northbridge chipset with an MSI logo applied to it or the fan. You can get replacements for them, you may have to splice wires sometimes, or you may be able to live with a larger heatsink and do away with the fan. Look at the fan for voltage and other specs. Find out what northbridge chipset you actually have with this motherboard if you wish to go heatsink-only. YOU have to decide if the Zalman will work, because it does interfer with some components on certain motherboards. Zalman has a web site where you may be able to check this out. I think they give dimensions of thier coolers there. 98% of the population is asleep. The other 2% are staring around in complete amazement, abject terror, or both.
