Recently my old external modem (Xmodem - V.92/56K External Modem) seems to have stopped responding. At first i just got a message a couple times a day saying the modem wasn't responding and to make sure it was turned on. It was, and the messages kept appearing more frequently. I tried rebooting the computer and reinstalling the driver, but that didn't work, and now nearly every time i try connect it doesn't respond. If it does happen to connect, then after a few minutes it stops responding and i have to shut down everything. i used to be able to turn the modem off and on again and it would sometimes work for longer, but not anymore.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be wrong? I unplugged everything and plugged it bak in again.. didn't work.. also cause it sometimes worked i don't think its the cables...
And also if it continues not working, i'll need to buy a new modem. any suggestions for one that is good, but not too expensive?

If you are not going to use linux and you have an internal slot available (preferrably PCI, though ISA would do) you can get an internal modem.

IF you have USB port available, you can get a USB modem.

Your Choice.

Good externals (hardware modems) cost around $100 US.
