About 6 months back, I took my computer into a local shop and asked them to look at why my games where running so choppy.
After a day or so, their tech called me back and said that I needed a new CPU fan and that he had put a new "super fan" on and overclocked my P3700 to 933Mhz.

Now, for the past couple of weeks, my computer has been acting like it's posessed. It turns itself on for about 5 seconds then shuts itself off again, and yesterday it was blinking on & off so fast I thought for sure there was a demon inside! =)

After all of this "blinking" subsided yesterday, my computer wouldn't boot at all. The fan would turn on, and the harddrive would grind for a second, but nothing would come up. So I took it into a local FUTURE SHOP (where my brother works) and they said that the overclocking probably did it in, and if not it was the power supply.

The good news is, I can buy all the parts I need from a local computer shop, and a freind of mine does this for a living so my labour is free. My question to you guys is why is FUTURESHOP telling me that I need a new motherboard AND processor? Wouldn't the problem be with one or the other....not both?
If so, how can I check?

I was thinking of buying:
- Powersupply
- AMD XP1800 +
- Asus A7V8X motherboard
- 256 MB DDR Ram

But could I just buy a new motherboard and powersupply using my old processor, or would the processor be toast to?

When upgrading the CPU 9 out of 10 times you will need to replace the motherboard.

The difernt boards are made for difernt CPUs and can handle up to certain speeds of the CPU.

P3 isn't compatible with P4 or Athlon. If you want to upgrade you have to change mobo as well. I dont know if any of the parts are salvagable/undamaged, you should ask them.
