I'm in the market for a new AMD64X2 CPU & mobo, which means I need a new power supply with a little more horsepower. I'm figuring in the neighborhood of 500W - 600W. I've heard so many horror stories, that I'm hoping someone can give me a few reliable, trusted PS brands to consider. I don't mind paying for a quality product that will be trouble free.
Thanks.
Wally

I like ENERMAX
I purchased it from NewEgg.com -- abotu 7 months later, the PC started to shut down on it's own, about 20 - 30 seconds later, started back up again. I conculuded it must be the PSU - and it was. ENERMAX replaced it with no problem and they were very quick. My PC now runs with no problems!!!

There are good and bad PSUs out there, so it's always a good idea to go with a reliable brand name (e.g., Thermaltake, Antec, or, as chrismr suggested, Enermax). You will need to determine what type of PSU your motherboard requires (ATX, ATX12V, etc.). It's best to select a model not only in terms of voltage, but amperage on the different rails; in particular, look for a model that has at least 18 amps on the +12V rail (check the specs). I also have used newegg.com - their website provides a great selection, and a wealth of info from customer reviews. Check out their PSU selector here.

i like thermaltake and antec but honsetly people do put a bit too much stock in brand name. i put a whitelabel "no-brand" 400-watt PSU in the system i biult for my cousin Matt for his birthday about 2 adn a half years ago and it is still spinning and powering away just as it should
HP Vectra VL400
1.0ghz Pentium 3
512mb PC133 SDRAM
120gb 7200rpm 8mb cache WD1200JB hard drive
ATI Radeon 9200 128mb AGP video card

Thank you all.
I've been on newegg & a few other sights & the Thermaltake 550W seems to have the required connections for my purposes. However, I notice that it does not meet Najitech's recommendation for the +12V rail. It is rated at only 15 AMPS. Thermaltake was one of the brands recommended by several people. Is this unit an under-performer? Even the Thermaltake 680 watt unit is rated at 15 Amps. Or are there more models with higher ampere ratings?
