Hi all,
This is an older notebook, running Win 98 that I'm trying to get working
better for a friend. I went ahead and formatted the drive not anticipating
any problems with reinstalling Win 98. Basically what is going on is that
after formatting, etc. it won't read from the cd rom drive. I have done a
lot of troubleshooting with various boot disks, etc. but I think it needs a
proprietary Compaq driver for the cd rom. I have searched all over the net
but can't come up with one. None of the generic drivers with any boot disk
will work. Also, due to it's age and that she is not the original owner, she
has no software of any kind that came with it.
If anyone either has these drivers or knows how I can get them I would
appreciate it.
Thanks
Gary

I had a an old 5200 and had to fdisk/mbr and then fdisk. Once I removed the old partitions I reboot the pc used the bottdisk again and went into fdisk again and created one partition. Then after that was done I restarted it put in the bootdisk again and CD rom and told it to boot with cdrom support and windows installed.

Got a question for you algae.

I also have an old 1235 presario notebook....

You said that yours has 1 gb of RAM. I have been wanting to upgrade my RAM but the specs for the comp say that 96 is the max. How did you upgrade yours to 1 gb?

Please respond, I would really like to know.
