i use dsl to connect to the internet and would like to use a voice dial up modem at the same time to be able to record phone calls. my problem is when ever i hook a phone line into the modem and out to the phone my phone will no longer work. my internet still works and other phones in my house still work. i even tried to use another computer with a dial up modem but i get the same problem. the phone doesnt work when connected to the modem. AM I ABLE TO USE A DIAL UP MODEM AND HAVE DSL SERVICE AT THE SAME TIME? if so how and what do i need?

There is no reason why it shoudn't.
Do you have a DSL filter on the telephone line going to the the dial-up modem. If not you need one.

And a splitter. There are two kinds: 1: This type allows you to plug into a phone jack if you have two phone numbers so that you can use both analog phones at the same time. 2:The other actually divides the phone signal so that you can (if you wish) have two connections using the same phone number. An example of this would be if you have Digital Cable or a Satellite dish that requires a phone line for updates.
You need the second type. Connect the splitter to the phone jack. Plug the DSL filter into one side and then connect the line to the dial-up modem into the port in the filter. Then, take the other phone line, plug that into the other side of the splitter and the other end into the DSL modem.

would i have to have a certain type of splitter or would any 2 line phone splitter would work?
i only want to use one number for bothconnections

As I said, you want the second type; the one that splits the phone signal; NOT a 2-line splitter.
Here's what you want:
