where did you get this "free drive"? You didn't get a driver disk? no documentation? there's nothing printed on the drive itself?

Have you done a Google search? These kind of "drives" need a driver from the mfg to work in Win 98.

I assume that this is a USB flash-memory drive. Be aware that Win98 will only support USB1, it will not support USB2.

I purchased a PNY 256MB USB Thumb drive ,it came with a installation disk for Windows 98, since I have Windows Me ,I did not use the CD .It said for WinMe and WinXP it was plug and play .However my OEM version of WinMe did not have all of the needed drivers pre-installed .They where in a .cab file .After a little searching and extracting the drivers to my driver folder I got it up and running ! On the USB 2.0 or 1.1 ,the drive I have is backwards compatable, I only have USB 1.1 at this time ! The drive works great ,my system reconizes it as another H.D. and I just drag and drop whatever I want directly onto the drive !

Win98se will support USB 2.0 with the drivers if you put a 2.0 card in or have it on your MOBO already. I know, I have a dual boot with 98se and XP, both will run 2.0
