Need Help finding heatsink

OS: Windows XP/Windows 98
CPU/Ram: 3.2Ghz/3.5Gb
Product: Intel D945Paw
Comment:

I have recently purchased a Intel D945Paw motherboard. I purchased a heatsink and CPU as well. The CPU works, but to my horror there is no way to attach the heatsink to the CPU, since the motherboard lacks the attachment holes (or the ones on there arn't in the currect position). The heatsink I bough said it was Socket 775 compatible, but isn't.

Now I need to find a heatsink (cheap one is preferred) for my Socket LGA 755 CPU (3.2Ghz, 800Mhz FSB). I don't want to buy another, wait 3 days for it to arrive only for it to be a complete waist of money if it doesn't mount. The motherboard uses the mBTX formfactor, so finding a comapatible case for it was a pain in the a**.

Now the only thing I need is the heatsink. (and fan)

Here is a photo of my motherboard that may help determine the currect heatsink attachment:

I have already wasted $19 on the case since it is mATX/ATX and not mBTX. I have found a mBTX case on ebay (and hopefully the mATX one that I bid on will be outbid, since I just now figured out it won't work either, so it may be another $50 down the drain)

I don't want to get another motherboard since I can't refund it and already found compatible RAM and CPU (which is now installed)

Plus it was cheap considering it had a PCI 16x slot. I tried to find another, but they only had AGP and were more expensive.

Thanks for the link!

I found one on the site you listed:

http://www.svc.com/acalp7.html

Just to make sure, will this mount properly?

Could you recommend a better one then what I found?

The Intel site has a HUGE pic of your board & it clearly shows 4 mounting holes for the heatsink:

Here's the info about the HSF you chose:

Thanks for the info. Looks to have the same Fan size as the failed heatsink I bought earlier, if this one breaks or is too loud I could try the other.

Here is another I found:

This is from the same site I got everything else and accurding to the description, it is "LGA-775 Prescott" Which is the type of mounting I need right? Right now looking at the other I found, the mounting bracket it uses seems close in size to the one I already have so it looks like it may not fit. I need to know the measurments from attachment hole to attachment hole, and the measurments of the heatsink I'm going to buy since photos alone arn't enough. Here is the link to the heatsink that I bought that turned out not to fit:

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?in...

Looks like it has slightly different packaging then what I got.

I need to be sure it will fit the motherboard before I spend any more money on one.

Looks like I may need to make a new thread, as it turns out, the BTX formfactor that this motherboard uses make it incompatible with standard LGA 775 (and Prescott ones too) heatsinks. I have found more info on the case and BTX info, and it looks like it needs a special heatsink type called a "Type II BTX Thermal Module".

I will have to make a new thread on this since this is a whole new problem.

Just in case one of your threads get's deleted:

You might wanna reconsider this idea altogether. Cut your losses...sell the BTX board & go with an ATX or mATX system

Well the problem with that is, that it will take alot of time to find someone dumb enough to buy my mbtx board lol. I have already found the Type I thermal module and case, sure it will be a bit loud and somewhat expensive, but right now time is more important to me. And it has DDR2 coupled with a fast PCI-E 16x slot, I have yet to find a ATX board with both that sell under $50.

Why did you choose a BTX board to begin with...price?

This motherboard you suggested, will it work with my CPU? I have a Pentium 4 3.20 Ghz Socket LGA755 processor with 800mhz FSB.

Thanks for the link, I am considering just buying that and the ram which would be the same price as getting the thermal module and case, so I guess I'm better off doing this since this board can go to 8gb of ram! 8gb is worth getting a 64bit OS, since 4Gb doesn't cut it. Theres alot about the motherboard you found thats better then the one I have so what I'm going to do is get that motheboard and some ram, and I will be good to go! I already have a ATX case and LGA Heatsink which I know for sure will work for that mobo, since the picture clearly shows where the screw holes are for it.

Thanks alot for that. (and the free 3 day shipping is what really made me change my mind)

I was planning on giving the atx case to my dad so I can use it to build him a computer, but I'll just buy another identicle one, he won't know the difference. (and he is paying for it all, so its not like I'm losing money)

I guess I'll just stash my BTX mobo away for safe keeping. Perhaps I'll use it to build my dad's computer. (he's willing to give my a $250 budget to work with)

My dad doesn't want a computer as good as the one I'm building, so overall I don't expect to go over budget on it.

Well now that payday has rolled around, newegg changed the price back up to $100+ which I can't afford, so I will have to settle for a mATX board that only can do 2GB of DDR ram.
