System reconizises drive as a DVD/RW during initializqtion, but when XP loads it sees it as a ROM drive. Use to work with drivers supplied with XP (it worked about as good as it could for an Artec device, didn't work work very well with write once disks, but ok with R/W). The current driver is provided by Microsoft and is ver. 5.1.2535.0. If anyone knows where I could aquire a driver for this drive that would allow it write disk again I would greatly appreciate it. All links to Artec that I have found are dead.
Thanks, Dave

You don't need special drivers...all you need are the ones included with XP. What you need is software & your drives need to be configured correctly. That is, don't pair up two optical drives on the same cable/channel, & whenever possible, setup the burner as the 2ndary master.

Well my Nero software does not detect a R/W device. I have the drive installed as the secondary master with no other drive on that channel. It worked before I had to reinstall my OS.

"It worked before I had to reinstall my OS."
Ah-haaa! A fact that was mysteriously left out of your 1st post. Make sure that you've install the latest motherboard chipset drivers. Have you installed SP2?

That will probably do it, that is the one thing that I have not done yet, but meaning to do.
Thanks, Dave

Well, I've installed all of the latest chipset drivers and even updated my BIOS. I've reinstalled Nero, and my system stills reports the drive as a ROM device. Any more suggestions out there?
Dave

Hi, Not real sure, but XP comes with Roxio (Adaptec) burner software and Roxio and Nero never got along together. Try removing the Nero. You may have to do a Sys Repair to get the Roxio back. Maybe!
Luck, Jim

To answer jam's question, I'm running
Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519(Service Pack 2)To JimPIM, I was not aware of Roxio's software being provided with XP. I just did a search of that and found that I should investigate it some more but.... the system still says that the drive is just a ROM device.
Under Linux the device works, so I know that it is not a hardware problem.
You know, this is just one of those things where I probably just have my head stuck up my @$$ and just can't focus on the problem.
I've been a tech for some 30 yrs., not quite up to date on various things, some of the system internals of any OS can be deep, but the problem could be shallow, but for some reason I can't see the solution because of all the %^$*!%#* bubbles.
If I could I would throw W$ out the window and run Linux exclusively, but there is software that I have to use that makes me dependent upon it (dammit). I could just use the Linux OS to burn with, because I can share the file system, but it would be nice to have it run under W$ again.

Hi, You are correct. No burner software would make the Burner just a Reader. I have observed XP loading the burner software on a bare driver when a burner is present several times. I have loaded Roxio/Adaptec 6 over the XP burner several times with good results and extra features. Before XP NERO install always(?) had a warning that all traces of Roxio/Adaptec must be removed before installing Nero. Don't remember much more than that. Will crank up XP as soon as I get some time and see what else I can remember.
