I have one sata hdd and one cdrw drive set to master on primary ide. I am buying a new dvd burner. Should I put this one on the primary ide drive and set to slave or seconde ide and set as master? What one would give best performance?

I'm using Power DVD with a DVD-RW drive that is a slave on the secondary channel.

If the only fixed disk in the system is the SATA drive then it is a no brainer. SATA uses its own controller so that frees up all the IDE channels. If the system boots reliably I would install one optical drive on each channel set as Master. That way you will never be sharing the IDE bandwidth. Which one on which Channel shouldn't matter. Just be sure the drives are all properly idenified by model in the BIOS. Not just AUTO. If necessary use the auto detect function on the same screen as the drives. Just setting to auto isn't enough, there is a keystroke required. Read the screen.

Summary: 40-wire is sufficient for any optical drive, but you can use 80-wire. I always use 80-wire cables in case I happen to change the configuration later on to include a hard-drive. Michael J ...
