Hi I need to get a new proceesor for my PC.
My motherboard info is:
Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5RD2-VM Rev 1.xx
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 0403 01/26/2006I currently have a 3.00 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4. Which Im happy to have one the same if I can not go higher (although that would be nice). However I am confused on knowing what socket type I have and need.
If someone could advise me if I can get a better processor and on socket type's I would be most grateful.
Thanks.

Why do you "need" a new processor? Is there something wrong with the one you have or is it that you "want" a new processor?
Your board has a socket 775 & supports Celeron, P4 & Pentium D CPUs. It does NOT support the Core 2 Duo or Quads:

My pc switched itself off a couple of times yesterday and said it was a CPU overheat when I turned it back on.
I did take the back off the pc and cleaned the CPU fan as much as possible. Ashamed to say it was caked in dust. The PC has run a lot quieter since, I asumed (not a technical expert) this would only be a temp solution and that it might be on the way out.
It also seems the CPU usage is on 100% a lot of the time and that appears to be explorer using it.
Maybe there is something I can do to change the usage by explorer?
Thanks for the advice.

You don't need a new CPU, your system needs a thorough cleaning...& I don't mean just the dust accumulation. If the CPU's running at 100%, the system is most likely loaded with spyware/malware, possibly viruses and/or trojans.
Start with CCleaner Slim, both the cleaner & the registry scan, then move on to spyware removal & virus scans. Run all scans from Safe Mode:

Also, use MSCONFIG to prevent unnecessary programs from loading at startup:

Yup, what Jam said. And check your power supply input vents to make sure they aren't clogged up with dust bunnies. Do the same with the output and make sure the fan is running well.

Thanks. Everything seems ok at the momment. Only had 2 bits of SpyWare, usually run antispyware regualrly. No viruses or anything like that. Thats scanned daily anyway. Again run CCleaner on a regular basis. All that is marked in startup is something to do with my display, my antivirus and CTFMON. Will check all the vents :)
Thanks again.
