I have a problem with my NEC ND-3540a DVD-RW drive.
It reads DVDs but cannot read CDs. When I insert any CD, the drive clicks 10-20 times and then does nothing.
When I double-click the drive in Computer, Windows just tells me to insert a disc.
DVDs are being burned and read fine. I already tried updating the current firmware (v1.01) to v1.04, to no avail.
Should I try to clean the lenses using a cleaning disc?

You can try cleaning the lens. There are two lasers in a combo drive. Your CD laser may be burned out.

Optical drives are really disposable hardware with the current pricing. See for some deals. You need to pay attention to the interface (IDE or SATA). Most optical drives are black these days.
