It doesn't appear that you gave the complete model number. From what I could find, it's an NEC LaVie NX LW450J/2xxx. You forget the "NX" & it seems there should be 3 more digits/letters after the "/2".
It apparently uses PC100 144-pin SODIMM, max of 256MB per slot for a max total of 512MB.The following memory site lists 4 different LaVie NX LW450J/2xxx models:

If you have internet connection on the laptop just go to crucial.com and allow the site to permorm a scan of the computer. Crucial should be able to tell you what kind and how much RAM you can use. Crucial guarantees their RAM to work if you buy what they recommend.
