Mysteriously full hard drive

Specs: Windows XP
Trying to help techno-phobic friend speed up his XP.

I've done all the usual stuff -- defrag, chkdsk, disk cleanup, etc. Scan daily with AVG.

I offloaded all his data to removable storage so only programs remain on hard drive. I uninstalled all unused programs. The only remaining programs are "small" ones -- WordPad instead of Word, etc.

Should be plenty of room on this 20GB hard drive now, but system info still shows hard drive as nearly full (only 17% free).

I am clueless as to what is filling his hard drive! Can anyone give suggestions how to search and destroy the culprit?

Do you have "show hidden files & folders" enabled? Did you empty the Recycle Bin? Did you dump the old System Restore files? Did you run a cleaning program such as CCleaner-Slim to get rid of all the accumulated internet garbage files? If the internet options have never been touched, all internet files from the previous 20 days are being retained.

Make sure you get the Slim version:

Thank you, Jam,
I have emptied recycle bin and run CCleaner. Thanks for mentioning the old System Restore files; I'll try manually emptying them to see what that frees up. Regarding the "show hidden files & folders:" I think this is where I am going to need some guidance!

I had enabled already enabled them then realized that I don't know enough about those system files to know what to look for or what to delete. And that's where I am now.....afraid to touch system files without advice and guidance.

I will use "search" to find huge files and then post again. What I need is advice to help me identify the rogue. Thanks!
