mybook hard drive....

i have a western digital mybook essential edition 500gb external hard drive that my bro in law bought recently, plugged it up and it picked up the first time everything ok but now it doesnt pick it up no more. i looked in the disk management and i dont see it in there also i checked in device manager cant seem to find it. it only picks it up in the icon tray when i right click safely remove hardware i only see usb mass storage. i uninstalled it restarted and still same thing, what is wrong with the hard drive how do i make windows pick it up in my computer.

Have you formatted the drive ? You might want to try that first.

I agree. I have had XP lose several drives. The only way I have seen to make it available is to reformat.

From my experience it seems that this happens when XP experiences a serious failure trying to read something on the drive. I suspect a software bug brought on by the read problem.

A couple of times the reformat failed on the drive. I have gotten around this by using Partition Magic to repartition the drive without the bad area.

(edit) Oops, i just noticed that you don't see the drive in Disk Management. You could try having it rescan the disks. Maybe try it on another system.

it was fat32 i then reformatted it to ntfs worked for a little bit but somehow its not picking up no more.

Does the bios see it? If it does, I would suggest trying a win98 startup floppy to partition and format it.

If the bios doesn't see the drive, it might have died.
