My xfx 4850 wont work right

Xfx Hd485xzdfc radeon hd 4850 1 gb ddr3...

Specs: Windows XP, q6600/4giigs
Card runs fine for non gaming. When I run gta 4 it runs great, looks great...and has a high frame rate....for about 30 sec. The game then does one of 3 things.
1 Freezes for like 10-20 sec then continues (audio stays on continuous)

2 Freezes then the gpu tries to recover and resets itself turning my monitor off then back on in like 20 sec

3 crashes the game with an "out of video memory" error.

I have tried the drivers from ati, the drivers from xfx and the ones on the disk. The card is not over heating and has never gotten above 45C. The card will crash in other games to, but I dont have nay others that really stress the card so it takes a lot longer. In gta 4 these symptoms will happen even on min setting, it will just take longer. This card is way over the min specs for gta 4.

So, do you think I have a defective card?
Thanks,
Cody

Check the fan on your GFX card is still working correctly.

Sound alot like what happened when my old 6600GT's fan freezed and the card kept overheating...

Do you have two 6-pin PCIe plugs connected to the card? Is your PSU at least 450W? Does it have a single +12v rail (preferred) or is it a multi +12v rail unit? It's possible that the PSU is buckling under the gaming load of the card.

List the make/model, wattage & amperage specs for your PSU.
