my screen randomly goes pixelated?

Specs: Windows XP
i have a problem with my screen.. sometimes it goes all pixelated out of the blue [see the images below].. i asked another guy who knows a bit about computers, and he said it could either be 1) the screen going. 2) the graphics card could be out slightly or i may need a new one. 3) or the computer could be overheated [but sometimes it happens straight away so it cant be that can it?].. and this usually happens when im casually using it, [i only ever have msn/iTunes/firefox open] and i have to minimize the internet window and maximize it again and the fuzziness will go.. but the other day, it went reeeally bad, all over [not like in the images] and i couldnt fix it, so i turned the computer off, and as it was shutting down where it goes to the windows screen and says "the pc is shutting down" or whatever, it was still fuzzy then.

ive scanned for viruses multiple times, and theres nothing found at all..

does anyone know what it could be? i could try taking out the graphics card and reinserting it, but im clueless with computers on the inside, so i dont know if i'll do it right lol or could it be the monitor going? since it was still fuzzy while shutting down?

help would be HUGELY appreciated.

Usually, display corruption means that something on the video card--usually VRAM--is going bad. But because your taskbar is fine, I think it might be a software issue. Reinstall the video driver.

I've actually seen similar display corruption on old Win98 machines with f**ked GDI files, but unless your hard drive is connected to an overclocked PCI bus, it's unlikely that your problem is Windows related.

yeah thats what the guy said, because the icons etc werent fuzzy then it could be the video card. [i dont know if you read the whole post] but it went fuzzy all over.. even the toolbar went fuzzy, similar to the pictures, but less of it.. like i could see the desktop background, and the toolbar, but a little of it cause the fuzziness was covering the whole screen [icons/background/toolbar etc].. and it continued as i was turning off the computer and the "windows is now shutting down" part came on.

[just searched on Google images for "fuzzy screen" and found this image which shows the EXACT problem my screen had..]

^justtt like that, but mine had a bit more fuzziness at the top and covered the toolbar too

so that made me think it could be the screen itself going, but if it was actually going, it would do it constantly wouldnt it? and not just randomly every few hours or certain days?
