my school's IBMs, escpecially the ones in the back lab room of my chemisrty class, are in need of some TLC. they are veeerrryyyy slooooww. they have the factory installations still, never been formatted, not to mention 6 years worth of spyware, virus, and students installing and uninstalling games. they will probably need tio be formatted, which i will do. my teacher doesn't care. disk-cleanup and defrag didn't help. ideas??

all we are supposed to do on these systems is type and internet so 350mhz is plenty, don't you think? they will take up to 400mhz so i was debating upgrading them (i have a few extra 400mhz slot 1 P2s laying around that i could put in them). is 350mhz enough for typing and web browsing?

Is Ritalin® a factor here?

Typically, these decisions are made by the school's instructors and staff, based on course requirements and many other factors (such as licensing)

" is 350mhz enough for typing and web browsing?"

Heh - kids. Seriously - folks have been typing and going online with PCs since the mighty XT (at 4.77MHz)

Computers in the future may have only 1,000 vacuum tubes and perhaps only weigh 1 1/2 tons.

You had better check the system requirements for Windows 2000 and especially XP before you think of installing those OS's on little 350-400Mhz Pentium II's.

Rule #1: Good Computers don't go down.
Rule #2: There is no such thing as a good computer.

I would stick with 98SE ,
1, it is a stable O/S
2,It doesnt hog a bunch of resorces,
3,Xp requires a min of 128 ram
And these newer O/S will slow the systems down even more
Check the Reuirements here;

-Just reformat.

-Reinstall Win98SE

-Get all CRITICAL updates for Win98SE

-Install Mozilla FireFox Broswer (and try to HIDE any IE icons)

-Install AVG with default settings

If the compter is open to all (anybody can do anything they want with it), then it'll be screwed up again in a few months and you'll need to do the above all over again.

If the computers' use can be protected some how from just anybody doing anything...they might actually be useful rather than a hassle.

jboy: you are seriously a jerk. scorn is one thing but that is blatent disrespect! if you dont like me then simply don't answer, but don't disrespect me! btw, i am NOT on Ritalin®!!!

anyway, i was planning on reformatting them. the suggestion about firefox is useful. thanx, guys. the reason i was considering 2000 Pro or XP is that they will automatically adopt the student log-in privilage levels (user only), preventing the others from damaging the systems, but set an administrator password log-in so I can set them up for the first time. will 2000 Pro run okay as long as there isn't too much junk on the systems? i will upgrade the one that only has 48mb RAM to at least 64mb, probably 96mb or something...anything else ideas wise?

Dragon, I try to ignore all your trillion of posts because nearly everything you have asked could of been found out by a web search. We all have to learn, but being satisfied one has learnt something themselves imo is better than learning something from other people, especially when it may be a load of baloney as a lot of reponses are!

Leave jboy alone his retorts are very entertaining, and it comes down to the old adage that the truth always hurts.

If you want to beef up security settings check out X Setup pro. Do a google for it, you might also be able to find it at pcworld.com. X setup let you disable and hide a bunch of settings such as the internet properties dialog, as well a allow you to tweak performance settings. Another idea is to get Deep Freze or Cleen Slate loader. Deep Freeze will keep a computer in one specific point in time, restart and it will revert the entire hard disk, cleen slate does abouth the same thing but dosn't reset document folders, as far as I know they are not freeware, but do provide lots of security. You can use Microsoft's Tweak UI to hide stuff in the add/ remove programs dialog box. Another thought is to use an OS that dosn't get affected by spyware badly such as linux, or if you are willing to do a lot of work you can use Windows for Workgroups 3.11, there is IE 5.0 for it and spyware is usually programmed in 32 bit, WFW 3.11 can only use 16 bit programs (and some 32 bit programs with Win322s). If you go with 98SE get spybot search and destroy for spyware protection and use Mozilla firefox

"i am NOT on Ritalin®!!!"

... well, (quite) obviously you SHOULD be

I am sure your instructor is only too happy to have you pestering this forum rather than him, since the term 'STFU' is likely frowned upon by the Home and School association in your area

jboy: as i said if you dont like me just dont communicate with me. but don't disrespect me. i do NOT need ritilan or any other dort of drug, and i would assume you do not have a degree is health, medication, or psycology, so you are obviously not qualified to say whether somebody does or does not need medicine. even if you do happen to have the degree, i am not really any of your buisness, so shut up about me if you please.

everyone else: thanx for the useful suggestions. i appreciate it alot.

I agree about jboy. He is a real pain at times! Don't tell me to leave him alone because I won't do it no matter what you say.

Windows 2000 will run exceptionally well @ 49MB of Random Access Memory. Thats exactly what I've got: A Pentium 1 358MHz w/ 49MB of RAM, and Windows 2000. I use it all the time, and it runs perfectly.

I agree that Windows 98SE is more stable than 2000 or even XP, but more and more these days, developers are starting to quit development of software and drivers for Windows 98SE, except for me. I am an amateur developer myself and I hope to continue to support Windows 98 and even Windows 95 for awhile to come.

I would suggest formatting those IBMs, and installing Windows 2000 at the least, because you have better security on them, and you have better control on who can get on them.

If God has to teach someone a lesson more than once to get them to learn it, it just goes to show how stubborn they are.
