My laptop won't boot up - please help!

Specs: Windows XP
My laptop seems to be 'stuck' on the safe mode options screen.
It doesn't matter what option I pick (safe mode, safe mode with networking, last good configuration etc) the same thing happens - the Windows bootup screen appears for a few seconds as it looks like it's booting up and then it returns to the safe mode option screen.

I'm fairly sure I accidentally got hit by a virus, which knocked out my AVG, but I noticed things were going wrong, and that's when I found out AVG wasn't working.
I went into System Restore, but all previous restore points had disappeared.
Downloaded another virus checker as the laptop was still 'working' at the time, and it was when I was running that to try and sort the problem that the laptop turned itself off, and on turning it back on the constant safe mode screen problem began.

I can access the screens brought up by pressing F2, F8, or F12 during the failed boot up attempts but being technically incompetent I have no idea what any of the options there actually mean.

I have found the laptop Product Recovery disc, and the Windows Vista disc (although I'm not sure it's the one that came with the laptop), but I am loathe to try and use them until I know whether they will delete the memory from the laptop as there are a lot of irreplaceable things on there that I can't afford to lose.

Please help if you can, I'm going out of my mind.

It is never easy to recover fully from a virus. Some may never be easy to find. The only for sure way is to use the correct OEM recovery disks.

I guess you could try a restore point if you can access them.
