My laptop only plays some DVD

September 3, 2011 at 12:34:35
Specs: Windows Vista

My laptop has cd/dvd reader/recorder and it was working fine but now I have some problems with it.

I can read all kinds of CD's. But I can only read some kind of DVD's.

I've tried to play 2 original movie DVD's and it doesn't do anything. It says the driver is empty.

I've tried some DVD's that I've burned before with files and it reads with no problem.

Then I had a DVD with some photos and it wasn't reading the DVD. Then I went to my other PC and made a copy of that DVD and now my laptop reads the new copy of that DVD.

I don't know what's happening here... maybe it's the lens but I wish it was some other software/driver issue... anyone have any idea?

By the way I have Win Vista 32 and my CD/DVD player/recorder is Slimtype DVD A DS8A3s

Thank you

Try cleaning the discs that won't run with a commercial disc cleaner that uses special cleaning fluid.

But the disks that don't play on my laptop, play on my other PC. Some of the disks have only been played 1 time so they are very clean.

I just don't understand why would the laptop play some DVDs and others don't... and it seems to have more problems with commercial DVD's than with recorded DVD's..

DVD drives are fragile devices and they go bad and the come from the factory bad too.

Commercial doesn't mean correct either. Some of the better quality ones seem to be the Windows OS types. Things like netflix seem to be made in a barn in some far away place. I like barns but dvd quality is very hard to judge by looking at it. you can't infact.

If worse comes to worse consider a new dvd drive.

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.
