Reply: (edit)Has this drive worked properly in the past? Sounds like a BIOS setup issue. Below are the specs for that drive from the Seagate site. Barracuda 7200.7 Capacity: 40.0 GB Speed: 7200 rpm Average Seek Time: 8.5 ms Cylinders: 1023 Heads: 256 Sectors: 63

Reply: (edit)How is it identified in cmos/bios setup? A 40 gig should be seen as LBA. Many drives will have a C/H/S of 16383/16/63 written to their firmware. That translates to about 8 gig but is the maximum C/H/S that a bios can use. The figure OtheHill gives is a drive translation which I think is for older bios' that can't see large cylinders. If you've changed how the drive is identified in cmos you should change it back to the way it was originally. It's possible the partition is corrupted. What software is giving you the diagnosis?
