My GT5220 will not boot first try

June 23, 2009 at 09:24:00
Specs: Windows XP
I can get it to boot up in ten or more trys by holding the power button in for 10 seconds and then releasing it. Unplugging the cpu and doing the previous works sometimes. No changes to the software or hardware recently. CPU is 3 years old.

THIS is a CPU.

Gateway/eMachines are known for using low quality Bestec power supplies. It soulds like your's is on it's way out. I suggest you replace it before it fails completely & possibly damages some other components.

Here's a reasonable replacement:

Thank you for your suggestion. I will keep this for future use if the problem persists. I read in feedback to another person with the same problem, a suggestion to set the cmos at failsafe defaults. Mine were at optimize. I reset to failsafe, and the cpu has come up first try six times in a row. I will see if this lasts and go from there.

Failsafe defaults are for diagnostics or just to get you going...they are not the best performance settings. The Gateway BIOS should be extremely basic. I suggest to run thru each & every setting & adjust accordingly.
