Comment: Hello! My computer runs slow when i go into programs/games, and when i go in the start menu, it takes a while to load up all the stuff, i think its my hard drive, here are my specs: PcChips M830LR Motherboard Athlon XP 2000+ Samsung 256MB DDR PC2100 RAM TNT2 Riva model 64 32MB Video card Quantum Fireball 30GB 5400rpm I'm not sure if the HD is a 5400rpm but most likely it is, cus this hard drive is from my old heulet pakerd computer, and its like 3-4 years old, and now i'm getting a WESTERN DIGITAL "SPECIAL EDITION" 80GB 7200RPM EIDE HARD DRIVE 8MB cache, and my video card is a problem with the games runing slow when i play, but my hard drive is busy alot when i'm playing games like C&C Generals and i dont have no programs open when i play, but i think its not a problem with the programs loading up to slow, beacuse i see when i'm doing stuff like web surfing and lisening to music i see my cpu usaege and it usual doesnt go over 50% but the Hard drive usage light is blinking like crazy,so do u think my new hard drive will help out alot? i think so, but i want ur opinion! thank you! -AMD Man

Reply: (edit)You have a TNT2 and you expect C&C Generals to run fast? Yes, a new HD will help, but I can't see why your current one really causes a performance issue. A 7,200RPM drive will obviously be better than a 5,400RPM drive. My laptop has a 30GB HD that runs at 4,200RPM (which is slower than yours) and it runs fine. As for your drive always being active, are you running into page file?

Reply: (edit)If your hard drive is constantly accessing, that could be an indication of `thrashing' Thrashing is caused by insufficient RAM, too many applications running, a memory hog or useful memory being depleted by applications not releasing it when closing. If rebooting temporarily solves the problem, it is probably the last one.

Reply: (edit)Try disabling Norton temporarily. If you have `full' protection enabled, it can really slow your system down. Thrashing is when memory is so low that the system spends most of it's time paging into and out of the swap file.

Reply: (edit)Disable all the power down options in power management. I always do. The hdd could be an ATA66 and at 5400rpm. My wife has one 20 gig and it is slower. The new drive you want, will be cool.

Reply: (edit)More RAM would help but is DEFINITLEY not necessary. 256 is plenty. More then likley it's your hard drive, and I've been in your position. I had a 5400 rpm hard drive, but I recently upgraded to a hard drive with the EXACT specs you are looking at(the Western Digital "SPECIAL EDITION", 80GB 7200rpm, 8mb cache). I got it from www.newegg.com and WOW. It's so much faster. My computer boots much faster and loads programs much faster. Buy this drive you will love it. Why the heck are you using a TNT2 and playing C&C Generals? Do you enjoy slideshows? I got a GeForce4 Ti 4200 for $100 from www.tigerdirect.com. (I used to have a GF2) It will blow your socks off, and it has an amazing price/performance ratio.
