If the printer worked before using the cable you have now then try resetting both ends of the cable. In the BIOS I think you need to set the LPT port to an advanced mode. Look at the link below. Uninstalling and installing the printer again may help. I had issues years ago with an Epson parallel port printer and the issues cited above were the problem.
