Isn't Vista on a DVD? Maybe your CD portion hasn't been working. Combination drives have TWO lasers in them. Your CD laser may be dirty or burned out. Are you positive your could read CDs just prior to installing Vista?
Get yourself a burner. Go to newegg.com and look at their selection. Many DVD burners sell for under $30 with free shipping. Be sure you get the same type of connection. There is IDE (wide ribbon) or SATA (small cable and less likely).
