my D3D adapter is outdated

Specs: Windows XP
When I try to run a game I downloaded after purchasing it says assertion failure and something about a D3D adapter. I scanned it and it said it was outdated. I want to know if that is what it means and if it can be done without puchasing anything. I would like to know if it can be updated or whatever it needs without costing

You haven't listed your system specs so we have no idea what's going on. But most likely, you're going to have to install a video card. Figure at least $50 for a low end gaming card if you buy online.
