I've done some work on an old computer. Changed the processor, more ram, and added an ethernet card. It ran great for two weeks. Then I leaned my computer up for easy access to get to the ethernet cable to change to another pc and after a few minutes notice it wouldn't power up. Does anyone have any ideas.

"Then I leaned my computer up for easy access to get to the ethernet cable"

You mean you changed the position of the computer like from horizontal to vertical or something??

If you put it back the way it was, does it work??

Sounds like a loose connection, short...??

Was it turned off when you leaned on it?

Just trying to get the picture. The computer was off, you leaned over it...putting a lot of weight on it to reach a cable...then when you tried to turn it on later...it would not power up?

If the above is what happened...this comes to mind:

Some of the cheaper cases out there are made of really thin, weak sheet metal. If you put too much weight on them at certain angles, the cases will actually torque (twist) and go out of square. This can cause one of the cards to loosen just enough to short the system.

Opening up the case can making sure all the cards are firmly inserted may solve the prob...if this is what happened.

ALSO...unplug all power cables, the plug back in firmly too, just for good measure.

HTH

I tried putting it back the way it was and it did not work. Guess i will have to wait till tonight and open the case. I hope your right. Hopefully a plug or card came loose, that can be plugged back up. Just curious if you had a bad processor would your computer still power up like it does when you put bad ram for instance.

Well...if the processor is just dead, you might hear the power supply fan running....if it's an older PC...maybe. But, in general, it'll be pretty dead.

Just leaning over PC does not usually fry a CPU. Has anything else been going on?
