Hi folks,
This is by no means an attempt to sell my laptop on computing.net, but to get some info on why it is showing incorrect information. I have an HP ze2113us laptop that is supposed to have 512mb of Ram, and a 1.6 ghz processor. However, for some reason, in my computer it is showing as: 797 Mhz 384 MB RAM.
I understand some computer companies don't exactly put in as much memory as they say, but I didn't think mine should be 128 MB off! Also, why the 797?
The direct image to see this is at: http://www.computersharp.com/laptop...
Just take off the laptop2.jpg part of the address if you want to see other pictures (such as hard drive space) of my laptop that might give you a clue. I am meeting a potential buyer tomorrow and I hate to sell something thats not 'true'. Perhaps I need to call HP?
Thanks

The memory on most laptops is shared. Part of the memory is for the system and part is for the graphics. You most likely have 128MB allocated for the graphics card.
Also, many laptops use "speed step" to throttle down the processor when it is not being utilized to save on battery life.

Well, it's not a theory - shared memory and speed step are facts. Whether that is your problem or not is another story.
I would bet money that the memory issue is definitely due to being shared. Because 1) most laptops use shared memory for graphics and 2) 128MB would be a common amount to allocate to the video card.
What is shared memery?: http://malektips.com/gen0040.html
Since your CPU is an AMD it actually uses AMD's PowerNow, not Speedstep which is an Intel implementation. But, they both do pretty much the same thing. Here is AMD's explanation of PowerNow: http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors...
Plugging the laptop into a power outlet will "probably" allow it to display the full CPU speed. But, I'm not 100% sure on that. It might be that you need to use an application that need additional processor utilization for it to "step up" the processor.
From one post I found, you can disable PowerNow by selecting the "Always On" option in the power settings. http://forums.amd.com/lofiversion/i...
Good luck.

i have a HP laptop, different model. it has 512mb ram and shows 384mb as 128mb is used for video memory - fairly standard.
The cpu is 1.8ghz but often shows as about 800mhz due to the power saving.
I do not think you have anything to worry about.
I think from memory it shows the full cpu speed if you click on Start, then Run, type in DXDIAG and run it.

to fix the problem with your laptop showing a slower speed is a very easy fix.
ALL laptops default to the powersetting for a portable/laptop in your power settings.
the simple fix:
Go to Display Properties
-Screensaver tab
-click on Power settings in bottom section
-Change the power settings to Desktop, or Always on.Windows will default the settings to a slower speed to save power.
Once you change it to a Desktop or to Always on, your true system CPU clock speed will be displayed in the system information
(quickest way to get system info is to hit the Windows Flag key+Pause/Break key)g/l
