If there is nothing onscreen then how do you know "everything else turns on" ? Does it boot fully to the operating system and play the startup theme for whatever operating system you have? Does pressing & holding the power button cause it to shut down or do you have to disconnect and pull the battery?
IMHO, a 13 y/o laptop is beyond the point of economic viability for repair.
then it is likely the backlight for the screen has failed. This still does not change my opinion that it is beyond economic repair. You can buy a far more powerful new machine with warranty for under $400 and I would guess it will cost half that amount to have a tech fix the old one.
Specs on that model include 64mb ram and a 4.8gb harddrive. It's a paperweight.
