Hi everybody.
Damn I'm 17 and i building my 1st computer has been hell.
My system is this.
AMD athlon XP 2800
3 x 256MB RAM PC2100
Maxtor 40 GB hardrive
MX4200 Geoforce Nivdia 128MB graphics Card
Motherboard - PC chips m848a
CD ROM/CD re-writer Phillps.
Anyways.I've been threw hell trying to find out what is wrong... first i had an atholonx 2600 XP and it blew cos nobody ever told me i needed heatsink + fan... So sad £60 in the drain you can imagine how i feel...
First time making a PC ok now i got an Athlon Xp 2800 learnt my lesson pasted it well.. and thought that was the problem.Sent MOBO they said it was faulty sent me a new one and still no POST.
But let me say ALONG TIME AGO from no where my computer started working and it went on BIOS... and i saw something that said MEMORY Wrong or something...
And it loaded my graphics card so thats fine...Now i went to a shop to ask a man if he knew my problem and he said PC2100 is To slow, but should this prevent me from POSTING? cos it beeps.... but it BEEPS once with MEMORY and it BEEPS once without MEMORY.. i checked on the beep list and it said it's normal or might be a RAM refresh failure can anybody help me?

First thing to do with one of these boards is to thoroughly check the jumper positions - in particular the 'clear BIOS' jumper as I've seen these come in with this jumper left in the 'clear BIOS' position.
"I know that I'm mad - I've always been mad..."

it's on 1-2 which on my manual says normal, my computer wont autucally start if its on clear bios as in previous trys.

Try a stick of pc 2700 that would match your cp;u front bus speed 333, board jumper should be set to 166

the pc 2100 would have run at 266 that may have been your problem. I have never used memory below cpu bus speed , but I believe this would be the reason for your problem.
You could probably get away with using pc 3200 but it would run at the bus speed of your cpu 333mhz & not 400mhz.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say it BEEPS once but straight away this is normal? according to the beep code but it also said 1 beep is D RAM refresh faliure?

Sorry dont know how to edit posts but i also realised
when i restart the computer straight away IT doesn't beep. it only beeps if i leave it for 7 seconds then restart...is there somethign wrong?
And if i remove ram it still beeps once, but if i removed the hardrive it wont beep at all.

Check the connection for the cpu fan. It may not be plugged into the correct point which will cause the mobo to shut the system down to protect the cpu.

Thanks but my cpu fan connected fine, and the mobo can stay on for days without shutting down when u hear my computer it JUST sounds like its working its werid and i know its not the graphics card... ( i think)

I would not expect it to work with pc2100,that is 266mhz, the fsb of xp2800 is 333mhz, you need at least pc2700 which is 333mhz or pc3200 which is 400mhz. You can usually use ram that has higher speed rating than CPU fsb but as far as I know you can not use ram that has lower speed rating than cpu. so pc2700 or pc3200 yes, but pc2100 no.
To get into bios keep tapping the delete key when you switch computer on.
I know that these pc chips mobos often ship with the CMOS clear jumper in the 'wrong' position to conserve battery life when in storage. Check the CMOS clear jumper is in right position.
the jumper is just above the floppy drive socket and should connect pins 1 & 2 which means it goes on the two pins towards the front of the case (going by the handbook i have for that mobo)

my CMOS jumper is way below like near the hardrive?
you sure you have the same MOBO...#
yehits like this
O O O
3 2 1yeah my monitor screen wont show anythign unfortunately for me to tap del... but i did once get in BIOS along time ago.

oh never mind i dint see the socket bit yep it's on normal its on 1 & 2 ... you auctually cant start the PC when its on CLEAR..

"you auctually cant start the PC when its on CLEAR.."
NO, but you can fry the board if you try to fire it up with the jumper in the "clear" position.
When you installed the heatsink/fan, did you plug it into the proper header? When you applied the paste, did you only use a dab about the size of a grain of rice? Are you sure you have an adequate power supply with enough amperage on the +12v rail? Are you sure all the jumpers & cable connections are correct on the board? Do you know how to setup a BIOS?
I'm not trying to be an A$$, but you already fried a CPU, & the parts you bought are poorly matched. You have the wrong RAM, a garbage motherboard, & a weak video card...even if you get it to run, it won't perform well. I don't think you have sufficient knowledge to be building a PC.
Asus A7N8X-X
1800+ @ 8 x 210MHz
512MB PC3200
Asus Ti4800SE 128MB
WinME/WinXP Pro

I dont care what you say, i'm building a PC because i want to learn from it and yes you are being a COMPLETE A$$ and i dont care how many mistakes i make i'm still gonna contunie trying to build it - thanks.
