My computer doesn't turn on

First signs: smell of something burning and the fan of the power supply doesn't work, then i shut down the computer. Later i tried to turn it on, nothing, no sound, no activity, just the lights. I changed of Power Supply, but it still doesn't work. Any idea? Second question: How to recover my files on my hard drive? I tried my hard drive in another computer, i can see my desktop and most of my files but can't do anything else, none of my programs work.

It sounds to me like one of three situations. Either your processor has died or your mobo had died or both.
As for your second question. Slave your harddrive to the HD in another working computer. You may have to set the jumpers on you drive to slave, it typically tells you how on the drive itself. And you amy have to tell the other computer to look for the Slave drive in the BIOS.

I agree that it is a motherboard or CPU problem. You may be able to determine which one by sniffing around for a burnt part. As for your HDD, if you were running XP or Win2k you will not be able to access your user preferences files (MyDocuments, Favorites, Desktop, etc.) if you do not boot your computer with that HDD. That was my experience maybe there is a way around it though.
