my computer detect my pendrive as a cd rom

Specs: Windows XP
when i insert my USB drive into my computer it detects it as removable drive instead of my name.When i try to open it, it will reply insert disk as if it is a cd rom. But when i restart my computer with the pendrive in it, my system will detect it all right but in the next 5 minutes it will detect it again as removable drive. When i try to format it,my system will reply "windows was unable to format the disk". Please I need someone to help me out. Thanks

It is a removable drive. Sometimes problems can arise with removable hardware because the same letter is assigned to many different devices. Try rebooting with the drive inserted. Once Windows properly identifies the flash drive go to Disk Management and change the drive letter assignment to a higher never used letter. See if that helps.

i have tried the above solution but the same problem repeats it self when ever i remove and insert the drive again.i have change the assigned drive letters several times but the same situation occur whenever i reinsert my pendrive.My system only detects my drive properly when ever i restart the computer,but the problem is i can't restart the computer whenever i insert i pendrive into my computer.Please help me out

So, when you reboot is the USB flash drive assigned the next available drive letter or the one you previously assigned it?

Have you previously had trouble with CDRW/DVDRW drives working correctly and had taken steps to correct it?
